From Sports Cars to Helicopters: How Our Favorite Celebs Travel

Wouldn’t it be amazing to travel by private jet, skipping all of those airport lines, or to have a collection of fancy sports cars? Well, while most of us can keep dreaming, those are just two of the high-class ways our favorite celebrities get around.

As they all flit off on fabulous summer vacations, we may catch a peek at some of these seven beauties shuttling down the runway or pulling up to the fanciest hotel in town.

On The Sporty Side

Sports cars are the bread and butter transport – they all own a few, filling out multi-car garages attached to Beverly Hills’ homes. But anyone can buy a Fiat or a Ferrari off the lot, so how special could these speedsters really be? Well, if you’re talking about Jay-Z’s Maybach Exelero, the answer is very special. Price at a sweet $8 million, the car is entirely one of a kind and can break 200 miles per hour, even though it’s heavy for a sports cars at over 2.5 tons.

A little less sporty and a little more mainstream is the Fisker Karma, an electric sedan sold between 2011 and 2013. Though certainly still not cheap, a significant number of celebs snapped this car up, including everyone from Ashton Kutcher to Al Gore to Ice T. Golfer Phil Mickelson even bought one.

As for the rest of us, as nice as these cars are, we all know the real celebrity perk is not the shine or the speed, but the parking. So while we’re circling the block in Manhattan and hoping a friendly Park Assist sign will let us know if there’s any room in the nearest pay-to-park garage, Jay-Z has door-to-door service and probably a chauffeur and valet to boot.

The Bad Boys’ Ride

Motorcycles seem like an awfully dangerous way to travel for those who make their money appearing on camera with their faces still in one piece but to each his own. Those who do hop on board, however, ride only the best, with Ducati’s Superleggeras and Desmosedicis being especially favored. There are only 500 Superleggera’s and 1500 Desmosedici’s in the world, and an unusually large number of them are owned by Jay Leno, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise. Do they know you can only ride one motorcycle at a time?

Two If By Sea

Admittedly, yachts only sort of count as a vehicle – they move, but they’re more like owning a private island. You’re not going anywhere, you’re just hanging out and enjoying the sun.

Unsurprisingly, Johnny Depp, the most famous pirate in Hollywood, tops the list of luxury yachts with Vajoliroja, built by Proteksan Turquoise. Overall, the 43-meter ship has a lot of classical touches that make it stand out, particularly its dark wood accents. It’s not surprising that this was Depp’s choice for his own pirate ship.

On Nicole Kidman’s yacht, Hokulani designed by Nuvolari & Lenard, you won’t feel like you’re roaming the seven seas with a mad swashbuckler. No, Kidman’s yacht is more modern and compact than Depp’s, while still sleeping ten guests. The Hokulani also features a swim deck, because even while at sea, you can’t have enough water.

The Fast and Fleet

Finally, there are the stars who would rather travel by private jet than join the rest of us in the TSA line before boarding the crowded cabins of commercial American flights today. This is unsurprising, of course – no one really enjoys air travel without a private jet – but some of these celebrities seem to be in quite a hurry, traveling by the fastest planes in the world.

Oprah, who of course has more places to be than the rest of us combined, says that her Bombardier Global Express is one of the best things she’s ever purchased. This is a serious jet, made by a company that also makes two of the fastest jets in the world, the Bombardier Global 5000 and Global 6000.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise, ever the daredevil, not only has a P-51 Mustang but also pilots it himself. Cruise got his pilot’s license in 1994, the same year he appeared in Top Gun.

Private jets are only for the wealthiest, and with good reason when one considers the costs and emissions associated with air travel. Still, it would be a joy to ride shotgun with Tom Cruise – although those of us in the economy just hope we’ll get out of the security line sometime today.
