In On The Joke: The Films of Phil Lord & Christopher Miller

A decade ago, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were unheard of in Hollywood. Their beloved but short lived cult classic animated series Clone High had been canceled a year earlier, and their next directing gig wouldn’t come until 2009’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Now, in 2014, they have become magicians of sorts, turning …

Clone High Ep 1.11 ‘Snowflake Day: A Very Special Holiday Episode’ is a limp holiday parody

Clone High Episode 11 ‘Snowflake Day: A Very Special Holiday Episode‘ Written by Erica Rivinoja Aired 4/13/2003 on Teletoon While Clone High never went out of its way to come up with inventive story lines, it found its magic in being able to apply a mix of historical comedy and quirky personality to the high school tropes we’d become …

Clone High Ep 1.10 ‘Litter Kills; Literally’ says goodbye to a beloved clone

Clone High Episode 10 ‘Litter Kills; Literally’ Written by Judah Miller & Murray Miller Aired 1/19/2003 on MTV   When Clone High is at its very best, it’s able to pile trope on top of trope, until it has this Escher-like contraption of story and parody that feeds into every facet of the plot. It’s not quite the …

Clone High Ep 1.08/1.09 ‘A Room of One’s Clone: The Pie of the Storm’/’Raisin the Stakes: A Rock Opera in Three Acts’ are two flawed high-concept episodes

Clone High Episode 8 ‘A Room of One’s Clone: The Pie of the Storm’ Written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller Aired 12/15/2002 on MTV   ‘A Room of One’s Clone: The Pie of the Storm’ is the only episode of Clone High to feature a voice over, taking a cue from many comedies – both …

Clone High Ep 1.07 ‘Plane Crazy; Gate Expectations’ stretches a few jokes a little too far for their own good

Clone High Episode 7 ‘Plane Crazy; Gate Expectations’ Written by Tom Martin Aired 12/8/2002 on MTV Part of the high school experience is being selfish with every single life decision, large or small. In between puberty stuff, trying to find your own identity, and staring at boobs, high school is about making decisions to serve and …

Clone High Ep 1.06 ‘Homecoming: A Shot In D’Arc’ sees JFK questioning his sexuality in hilarious fashion

‘Homecoming’ begins with one of the show’s best opening scenes: it’s time for the homecoming rally, and none other than 90’s ESPN regulars Dan Patrick and Chris Berman are there to cover the telecast. But there really isn’t a telecast: Dan’s spouting phrases like “You said an expository mouthful, my versatile friend” into a balled fist, and the ham-handed Berman points out his mic isn’t plugged in and there really isn’t a camera on them.

Clone High Ep 1.05 ‘Sleep of Faith;La Rue d’Awakening’ brings the stress of standardized tests to Clone High

You can’t really call the first four episodes of Clone High tame, but for me, the show begins to truly show its weirder shades to follow in later episodes of the series (like the rock opera episode, or the one about the evils of littering) in ‘Sleep of Faith’, splitting up most of its characters to simultaneously take on the high school tropes of SAT’s and taking drugs, all while doing little origin stories about Mr. Butlertron and Joan…. and of course, Ghandi’s adventure, easily the weirdest of them all.

Clone High Ep 1.04 ‘Film Fest: Tears of a Clone’ piles on the parodies in another fantastic episode

For all of its wacky animation and pop culture references, Clone High is a very thought-out show, one which uses every single line of dialogue and inch of screen to maximum effect. A perfect example of this is ‘Film Fast’, which – like last week’s magnificent episode – manages to cram in a half-dozen different parodies in both obvious and subtle fashions, without ever losing sight of its overarching story and goals for the famous teenage clones.

Clone High Ep 1.02 ‘Episode Two: Electric Blu-Galoo’ takes on the tropes of high school elections

Clone High Episode 2 ‘Episode Two: Electric Blu-Galoo’ Written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller Aired 11/3/02 When you were in high school, how far were you willing to go to get the person you liked to notice you? Like I said last week in the review of its pilot, one of the many levels of …
