The 2013 “Hey You Geeks!!” Holiday Shopping Guide

What do you get the Wookie who has everything? Yes, it’s that time of year again; time to figure out what to give those passionate geeks in your life for the holidays. Whether they believe in the jolly, white-bearded Santa, the white-bearded wisdom of Obi-Wan or believe that the rotund, white-bearded George R.R. Martin will actually finish The Winds of Winter, the film, comics, TV and gaming geeks in your life deserve to know you care. This year, Hey You Geeks is covering all levels of geekdom with a 2013 gift guide which includes something for everyone.

Blu-rays and DVD’s

Always a good place to start is with the new Blu-ray and DVD collections conveniently released around this time each year. This year’s big movies like Man Of Steel or Pacific Rim make obviously great choices on Blu-ray, but here are four of 2013’s newest collections offering more unique, nostalgic value.

Akira: 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-Ray – 25 Years ago, Katsuhiro Otomo’s groundbreaking anime classic single-handedly changed the face of Japanese Animation. This futuristic cyberpunk film holds up today as not only one of the greatest anime films of all time, but also one of the greatest sci-fi visions in film history. The anniversary Blu-ray is full of more than 120-muinutes of extras including the “Restoring Akira” documentary, original storyboards and more.

bbBreaking Bad: The Complete Series Blu-Ray – Packaged in a collectible replica money barrel, the collection features the entire, groundbreaking series and more than 55 hours of special features spanning each and every season. The set also includes an all new two-hour documentary,16 page booklet with a letter from Vince Gilligan, a commemorative challenge coin designed by Vince Gilligan and best of all, a Los Pollos Hermanos apron to where while cooking (food, not meth).

msMST3K 25th anniversary edition DVD – To celebrate the 25th anniversary of everyone’s favorite B-movie riff show set on a spaceship, this Mystery Science Theater 3000 special edition collects four never-before-released episodes as well as two long-out-of-print bonus episodes and a look back at the history of the show. Titles Include: Moon Zero Two, The Day The Earth Froze, The Leech Woman, Gorgo, Mitchell and The Brain That Wouldn’t Die.

Jack Ryan Collection Blu-ray – With a new Jack Ryan film coming soon and the recent death of Jack Ryan creator Tom Clancy, this new collection is a great look back at the franchise featuring all three incarnations of Jack; Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. Randomness

Another great, albeit random gift that also makes the perfect stocking stuffer would be any among the incredible line of Marvel bottle-openers Diamond Select Toys has available. Those beers don’t open themselves, so why not have Galactus, Silver Surfer, Venom or even the Infinity Gauntlet itself do the dirty work for you.

Games

Board games are amazing fun and one of the best ways to bring people together. What better way to bring people together than by tearing former people apart in the new Walking Dead version of the classic board game Risk? Risk is the game of global domination, one that notoriously takes hours to play and even has its own Seinfeld episode. The new Risk: Walking Dead “Survival Edition” is based off of the Image Comics series and offers a fun, new twist on a brand new map set in the southeast United States. A new deck of “Supply Cards” add strategy, fun and flavor to this classic tabletop game. Too dark for you? You can also check out the Plants vs. Zombies edition.

c26-1589947207-2-sAnother great game is the new, second-edition of A Game of Thrones The Board Game. Based on the book series, not the HBO series, this almost Risk-like game is set after the death of King Robert Baratheon. Taking control of the well-known characters from the books, players fight for the throne of Westeros, be it through force, coercion or diplomacy. I’m on team Daenerys!

batman_arkham_origins_video_game-wideSwitching gears to video-games, forget about buying a new console and wait out the inevitable glitches until spring. Until then, the title to play is Batman: Arkham Origins, the third game in the absolutely stunning Arkham series. 2011’s  Arkham City was, in my opinion, the greatest comic book game ever made. Arkham Origins works as an original prequel storyline set several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. There really is nothing like playing as Batman, and the mechanics of the Arkham games have the character’s movements and design down to an art form.

Toys!

At the moment Marvel does the movie thing far better than DC does, but one thing DC excels at above Marvel are collectibles. DC Collectibles have a number of really cool collections they’ve put together from new and classic series’ including the must-have New 52 Trinity War three-pack (featuring all three characters from the upcoming Man Of Steel sequel), The New 52 Superheroes vs. Super Villains 7 Pack and the Justice League New 52 7-pack. For those with a taste for the classics, check out the insanely kick- ass Dark Knight Returns Action Figure set.
