18 Things You Didn’t Know About Joss Whedon’s ‘Firefly’

It never fails how every few years some of the best television shows get canceled after only one brief season. My So Called Life, Freaks and Geeks quickly come to mind as do more resent series such as Terriers and Rubicon. Perhaps of all the “one season hit wonders”, the series with the biggest cult following has to be Joss Whedon’s space western Firefly. Despite high expectations for the project, Firefly had averaged only 4.7 million viewers per episode and was 98th in Nielsen ratings. It was canceled after eleven of the fourteen produced episodes were aired. Despite the series’ relatively short life span, it received strong sales when released on DVD and because of large fan support Universal Pictures agreed to produce a film based on the series, entitled Serenity.

    More fun factoids: Rather than the Lassiter, the original rare artifact Joss Whedon wanted the Firefly crew to steal in “Trash” was a copy of the White Album on vinyl. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get the rights. Also, Kaylee has a small figurine of Han frozen in carbonite next to her hammock in the engine room.
