Get to Know the Characters of AMC’s ‘Preacher’

Preacher

I’ve been hearing rumblings about an adaptation of Garth Ennis’ Preacher comic for what feels like a long while, and it looks like those rumblings are finally amounting to something. AMC’s adaptation of the cult comic will be premiering this month, and accordingly the promotional materials are coming fast and heavy. For those unfamiliar, Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a disillusioned Southern preacher who comes into contact with a mysterious entity that grants him “the voice”, the ability to make anyone and anything obey his command. At the same time, Jesse also learns that God has abdicated his throne in Heaven, and departed for parts unknown. With this knowledge and the power to make the Almighty fess up to all the biggest questions theology has to offer, Jesse embarks on a mission to literally find God, along with his ex-flame Tulip and a hard-drinking, hard-fighting Irish vampire named Cassidy for good measure.

At least, that’s what the comic was about. How closely the TV adaptation will follow those events is unclear, and there have been a few notable characters missing from cast lists and promo material. Where’s the Saint of Killers, first and foremost? But also Starr, Hoover and Featherstone, and the L’Angelle family? The latest piece of material, a behind-the-scenes featurette featuring the cast and crew talking up the characters of the show, gives us more indication that the Preacher series may be a heavy departure from the comic. For instance, we know that in the show, Jesse takes over his father’s church. Which means his past, and family history, will probably be getting some fairly drastic changes. Tulip is also apparently his “childhood friend”, another change that could indicate some significant alterations. And why the heck do we keep seeing shots of Cassidy dressed up like a fancy waiter on a plane? As a fan of the comics, I’m interested in what AMC does with the story, but that interest is tinged with a bit of trepidation.

The cast and crew of Preacher all seem enthusiastic at least, and you can see that enthusiasm for yourself in the video below.
