Director Andrew Dominik burst onto the film scene in 2007 with his meditative The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford, a film that surprised many critics and wound up near the top of many best of the year lists in what was a strong year in film. Thus, his follow-up venture was eagerly anticipated by many. Originally titled Cogan’s Trade before being renamed Killing Them Softly, the movie sees Dominik once again taking on screenplay duties as well, this time adapting from a novel by George V. Higgins. Brad Pitt, Sam Shepard, and Garret Dillahunt reunite with the director, joined in the cast by Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins, Scoot McNairy, and Ben Mendelsohn. May just be me misinterpreting your phrasing, but ‘Jesse James’ definitely wasn’t Dominik’s debut. 2000’s ‘Chopper’ was his first film.
