What a strange course the Call of Duty franchise has taken. What began as a World War 2 shooter before taking a leap forward in time to the present has just…..kept going forward, and now we suddenly have spaceships and mechs. Not very many lasers, though, which strikes me as somewhat odd. If you’re gonna do a bang pow kaboom shooting extravaganza set in the future, why not lasers? Are bullets just the best that ranged infantry weapons are ever going to get? Because the new trailer for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare seems to have every bit of futuristic military tech it can think of on display, and yet we must still apparently go sans laser. For….realism I guess?
Anyway, the real draw for Infinite Warfare isn’t the futuristic setting, but the developers: Infinity Ward, who developed the much acclaimed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series, as well as the somewhat less acclaimed Call of Duty: Ghosts. The hope is that Infinity Ward are here to whip the COD franchise back into shape, returning it to its former glory….whatever that may be. Whether or not they actually succeed is one thing, but by the looks of things developer Activision are banking on Infinity Ward’s stamp on the game helping to boost sales. After all, the name Infinite Warfare evokes both the Modern Warfare series and Infinity Ward, despite not making much sense on its own. Infinite Warfare? Isn’t the whole point of war that it ends at some point, thus resolving whatever conflict sparked it off in the first place? Isn’t the goal of war that the war ends? My nitpicking aside, the game looks like a fun enough bit of sci-fi shooting action, though many are already crying foul that this is for all intents and purposes no longer a Call of Duty game. It’s hard to argue that, all you’d really need is one baddie with a glowy-eyed helmet and we’d essentially be looking at Killzone 4.
