I may have let this slip once or twice here on the site or to random passerby on the street, but I’m -really- jazzed for the upcoming third installment in Marvel’s Captain America series. Winter Soldier is one of my favorite Marvel Studios films to date, and for the most part the entire Winter Soldier team is back for the next installment, including directors Joe and Anthony Russo and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Can the team make lightning strike twice? Well, that remains to be seen. If Civil War turns out to be a let-down, it wouldn’t be the first time the team behind a previous slam-dunk fumbled the ball on the second try. But I like to remain optimistic, and I have faith that Civil War is gonna be a darn fine movie. I guess we’ll know for sure when the film releases in a little under a month.
In the weeks to follow, you can expect the marketing for Civil War to ramp up pretty significantly, and Marvel has already started hyping the film with a series of behind the scenes featurettes featuring the cast and crew.
First up is a video putting a very welcome spotlight on the film’s female cast, including Scarlett Johansson, Emily Van Camp and Elizabeth Olsen. It’s refreshing to see marketing material like this aimed exclusively at the female members of the cast. While not too long ago they might have been sidelined in much of the promo materials, Marvel is ensuring that the women of Civil War get their share of the limelight, and good on them for that.
Next up is a featurette that focuses mainly on the two leads of the film, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr, as well as a bit of talking head action from the directorial team. The Russos in particular seem passionate about bringing this story to the screen, and for a lot of people that passion is a reassurance that we’re in for a great ride.
Rounding out the trio of BTS footage is a slightly more informal series of cut-down interviews with the cast and crew. This is probably the most interesting of the three promos because it feels less like canned sound bites and more like the cast actually being themselves. It also features a lot more on-set footage, which is always interesting to see. Sadly there isn’t anything to be seen of Tom Holland, the new Spider-Man. Seems Marvel are playing things pretty close to the vest where he’s concerned.
