Who wouldn’t join a movement led by Meryl Streep?
Streep is joined by Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter in the first trailer for Suffragette. The film is directed by Sarah Gavron from script by Abi Morgan and also stars Ben Whishaw and Brendan Gleeson.
Suffragette is the story of the struggle for women’s suffrage in early 20th-century Great Britain. Mulligan plays Maud, a young working mother who joins the Women’s Social and Political Union to campaign for the right to vote. Streep will portray Emmeline Pankhurst, a real-life founder of the WSPU and controversial leader who encouraged militant tactics.
The film is set to open the London Film Festival and looks like it will be the leader for this year’s feel good historical British story following The King’s Speech, The Iron Lady, The Theory of Everything, and The Imitation Game. The story sounds interesting and with that cast on board it will surely garner some awards looks if it turns out well.
Suffragette opens in limited release on October 23 with a wider one on Thanksgiving.
