Disney is keeping that re-making train rolling along by reimagining one of their own beloved 70s classics. Indie director David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) may not be the most obvious choice to direct a big Disney family movie, but it goes along with the trend of studios snatching promising independent filmmakers and letting them direct a humungous money-maker of a movie (good example being Colin Trevorrow directing Jurassic World after only doing one other feature film, Safety Not Guaranteed). This tactic can usually go either way, but the first teaser for Pete’s Dragon does look somewhat promising. Here’s the synopsis:
For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.
This teaser trailer provides enough of a sneak peak to stir up excitement for a new generation of kids and families. It stars Oakes Fegley, Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, Karl Urban, and Wes Bentley.
Pete’s Dragon will soar into theaters in the US on August 12. Check out the teaser below!
