CGI, for all its faults, has given us the ability to bring countless wonders to the screen. Alien vistas, beautiful fantasy kingdoms, that young Robert Downey Jr in Captain America: Civil War. There are almost no limits to what we can use it for. So why is it that most of the time CGI is “that thing we used to make cities blow up”? Years from now, scholars will look upon late 00s and early ’10s Hollywood’s glee for spectacular city destruction and draw all manner of conclusions. It’s already going on, actually. And by the looks of things, Independence Day: Resurgence will be a major talking point.
A new Extended UK trailer for the film is here to give is a bigger and better look at the upcoming sci-fi destruction fest, and it still looks like it has the potential to be a lot of big, loud, dopey fun. Of course, it’s also showing signs of falling into that nasty sequel habit of being a highlight reel of the last film, with some repeats or callbacks to key scenes, like the telepathy scene. But even if it plays out like a bigger, louder retread of the first, this still looks like the kind of thing that gets me morbidly curious enough to actually go see it.
