You can’t keep a good franchise down, and for a very large number of people, J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter universe is a very, very good franchise. While the core book/film series is fairly definitively over, that hasn’t stopped Rowling from exploring other corners of her universe with spinoffs and side stories, and it was all but inevitable that one of them would get the feature film treatment. But rather than pick one of the stories that expands on an existing Harry Potter character, WB have decided to chart some new territory with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
The film takes viewers away from the familiar UK setting of the books and movies and into 1920s New York, to tell the story of a former Hogwarts student named Newt Scamander. Check out the official synopsis for more info.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
While the last half or so of the core Harry Potter movies decided to go the dark route, visually, Fantastic Beasts looks a bit more colorful and bright to me. Or maybe it’s just that Eddie Redmayne naturally lends anything he’s in an air of cartoonishness…..for better or worse. Personally, I’ve never been that into the Harry Potter franchise, but Fantastic Beasts looks like I could still watch it with little or no knowledge of the intricacies of the lore and still have a fun time.
