The British drama film is directed by Simon Curtis and written by Adrian Hodges and along with Michelle Williams the film also stars Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, Dominic Cooper and Emma Watson. The film is based on two books by Colin Clark and depicts the making of the 1957 film The Prince and the Showgirl which starred Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier and focuses on the week in which Monroe spent time being escorted around Britain by Clark, after her husband, Arthur Miller, left the country.
In a recent interview Williams told the Daily Mail, “I knew I wouldn’t be able to resist, eventually. Physically and vocally, everything about her is different from me. I’ve kind of gone to school and had teachers help me understand Marilyn, so I could project an essence of her. When I first approached the part, I thought that there were three, even four parts to Marylin… I feel like we live together… At a certain point, something else does take over. I don’t quite feel myself these days.”
Baz Bamigboye who reported for Daily Mail also stated that he was “knocked out after viewing some footage shot by cinematographer Ben Smithard.” He went on to say, “One moment there’s the lightness of touch required by the high comedy of being showgirl Elsie, the next there’s the poignancy of Norma Jean.”
Reactions thus far have been extremely positive to her portrayal of the icon. The film will be released and distributed in 2012 by The Weinstein Company.
