One of the surprise movies of the year was the feature length documentary called Senna, dubbed by most critics as the must see doc of 2011. t won the Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and now a trailer has finally been released. The film revolves around Brazilian F1 champion Ayrton Senna’s rise to fame, and chronicles his life from his early days in karting, through his climb to the top of the Formula 1 tree to win the world championship, up until his untimely death on the track at the young age of just 34.
The film marks Asif Kapadia’s fourth feature film as director and received universal acclaim with a 100% fresh critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes as of July 2011.
Dan Jolin of Empire Magazine gave the film 4 stars and stated that it is “ambitiously constructed, deeply compelling, thrilling and in no way only for those who like watching cars drive in circles”. Steve Rose from The Guardian, also giving the film a 4 out of 5, praised the fact that “with so much recorded footage of Formula One available, it has been possible to fashion Senna’s story as a live action drama rather than a posthumous documentary.
