Does anyone else get the sense that Hollywood still doesn’t quite “get” video games in 2015? If you look at the movies it’s all still feeding quarters into a machine, getting a high score, winning a new life, joystick flailing, button mashing, and old 32-bit side-scrollers with wacky sound effects. Yeah, there’s Wreck-It Ralph and a few other good examples, but then you look at something like Pixels, and the movies still have a lot of catching up to do to where games are today.
Pixels, directed by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter, Home Alone) stars Adam Sandler as an ’80s video game champion tasked by the President (Kevin James) to fight off invading aliens taking the form of classic ’80s games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. And though I wouldn’t put it past Hollywood to make a dark, gritty reimagining of Space Invaders or Missile Control as is originally shown in the first trailer for Pixels, Columbus’s film is an action, sci-fi comedy also starring Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage, Jane Krakowski, Sean Bean, Michelle Monaghan, and Ashley Benson.
Here’s the full synopsis via IMDb:
In Pixels, when intergalactic aliens misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them, they attack the Earth, using the games as models for their various assaults. President Will Cooper (Kevin James) has to call on his childhood best friend, ’80s video game champion Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler), now a home theater installer, to lead a team of old-school arcaders (Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad) to defeat the aliens and save the planet. Joining them is Lt. Col. Violet Van Patten (Michelle Monaghan), a specialist supplying the arcaders with unique weapons to fight the aliens.
Pixels opens this summer on July 24. Watch the trailer below:
