Jake Gyllenhaal looks for vengeance in the boxing ring in ‘Southpaw’ trailer

Jake Gyllenhaal in Southpaw

I don’t know what catalyzed Jake Gyllenhaal into the career resurgence he is in right now, but I’m excited for whatever he is going to do next.

The first trailer for Southpaw dropped on Friday, which stars Gyllenhaal as Billy “The Great” Hope, Junior Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World. The film, from The Equalizer director Antoine Fuqua, also stars Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Rita Ora, Naomie Harris and Victor Ortiz.

Southpaw follows Hope as he struggles through a tragedy and tries to get himself back in shape to become a contender once again. This film’s main selling point is certainly the performance by Gyllenhaal and how he is able to immerse himself into a role again, much like he did in Enemy, Prisoners, End of Watch, and Nightcrawler.

Fuqua has been dipping into bigger movies lately with The Equalizer and Olympus Has Fallen, but it looks like Southpaw could be more in line with his most famous work, Training Day, with the director focusing more on a character than big action set pieces.

Southpaw hits theaters on July 31. Read the synopsis for the film and watch the trailer below:
