MTV caught up with James McAvoy to talk to him about his role as Professor Charles Xavier in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class. When asked about where he would take the character and how it would relate to the past films McAvoy states, “I’m basically going to try and bury Patrick’s performance.” The First Class storyline will focus on the friendship of Xavier and Eric Erik Lehnsherr a.k.a. Magneto leading up to their divide. Xavier will also be shown with hair and the ability to walk, with the possibility of how his disability happened later in the film.

‘”I think the fun about these films, when you go back and you either reboot or do a prequel, is you get to see how people became who they are,” he explained. “That means that you have to do them differently and by the end of the movie you have to do them the same way. The interesting journey is what happens to them, what changes them, what makes them evolve — not just mutate, but emotionally and psychologically evolve.”‘
