Yahoo has the first look at the long in production Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. This new trailer is attached to Michael Bay’s latest debacle Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon. Once again this new M:I film stars Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, the leader of the Impossible Mission Force, or IMF, and the team of IMF while they take on mutli-millionaire villains and travel to exotic locales while participating in insane action sequences. Simon Pegg and returns from the third film as part of IMF but we now have a whole new set of stars including Jeremy Renner (reportedly being groomed to take over for Cruise), Paula Patton, the great Michael Nyqvist, Josh Holloway, Tom Wilkinson, and Lea Seydoux. However the most interesting thing about this whole project is that Brad Bird is directing. Yes, that Brad Bird, who directed animated films like The Iron Giant and Ratatouille. He’ll be making his live action film debut. As someone who loves Bird’s previous work, I can’t wait to see what he does with a live action film.
I loved J.J. Abrams Mission: Impossible III, which came out in 2006 and featured a terrific villainous performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Instead of being over the top and ridiculous, Abrams grounded the film in reality and turned it into a serious action thriller. Abrams is producing this one, a good sign. The other big draw, even though he is only seen briefly in one shot in the trailer, is Nyqvist playing the villain. If anyone can give Hoffman a run for his money, it is him. Anybody who saw The Millennium Trilogy knows how good this guy is. I think the trailer looks good and I like the use of Eminem’s “Won’t Back Down” in the trailer.
