Look out for Hugh Jackman. He is behind you.
The first, full trailer for director Joe Wright’s Pan debuted on Monday and featured a more in-depth look at the plot of his upcoming Peter Pan prequel and highlighted a few characters that will be prominent. The film stars Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara, Adeel Akhtar, Taejoo Na, Nonso Anozie, Kathy Burke, Kurt Egyiawan, Lewis MacDougall, Leni Zieglmeier, Jack Charles, Amanda Seyfried, and Levi Miller as Peter Pan.
Pan follows Peter as he makes his first trip to Neverland and comes in contact with the pirate Blackbeard (Jackman). He must team with the warrior Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara) and a new friend named James Hook (Garrett Hedlund), Peter must defeat the ruthless pirate Blackbeard to save Neverland and discover his true destiny—to become the hero who will forever be known as Peter Pan.
Originally intended to come out this summer, Warner Bros. moved the film to the fall and maybe that will work as a good bookend to the blockbuster fares of the summer season. Wright is known for his work on period dramas (see Anna Karenina or Atonement) and the visuals on display in this trailer show that the film could truly have a magical feel to it (outside of the cheesy song at the beginning).
It is always interesting to see an actor dive into different roles and it looks like Hugh Jackman is having fun with his new villainous character. It’ll be interesting to see if this prequel works, or if it is a dud that WB is throwing away to get rid of.
Pan opens on October 9.
