‘SNL’ promotes writer Leslie Jones to series regular

Saturday Night Live writer Leslie Jones has been promoted out of the writer’s room and onto the stage. She was hired back in January along with LaKendra Tooks and Sasheer Zamata in response to criticisms of the lack of African-Americans on SNL. Jones has done some sketches in the past, but a recent Weekend Update skit drew some controversy.

“Number 1 Slave Draft Pick” involved Jones congratulating Lupita Nyong’o for her Oscar win, then moved to how Jones had problems with men. She said she would have more luck in the Old South, as a strong baby-making slave. Many had problems with the message, but Jones stood by it, saying if a man said something similar in a rap it would be fine.

No word yet on when Jones will make her debut.
