Animated movies aimed at adults always seem like a risk to me. Not because I think that animation is inherently for children, heavens no…..it’s because most of the population thinks that way. Take it from someone who spent years slinging DVDs at a neighborhood rental store, there’s no harder “sell” than trying to get a grown adult to rent an animated film when they aren’t looking for something to watch with their kids. Sausage Party, the new animated comedy from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg looks like this hurdle is one they’ll probably struggle to overcome at the box office. The movie looks funny, mind you, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this is one that will meet its real success on home viewing, when its actual target audience of teenagers and stoned college kids will find easier access to it on streaming services. Still, Goldberg and Rogen’s names being attached to the thing will probably give it a significant boost, so my powers of foresight could be completely off on this one. Check out the official synopsis and judge for yourself.
Sausage Party, the first R-rated CG animated movie, is about one sausage leading a group of supermarket products on a quest to discover the truth about their existence and what really happens when they become chosen to leave the grocery store. The film features the vocal talents of a who’s who of today’s comedy stars – Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton, and Salma Hayek.
Ok, that’s an impressive cast. Take a look at the trailer for Sausage Party below.
