The first trailer for the “battle rap musical” Tokyo Tribe by director Sion Sono dropped on Thursday and put the crazy action on display.
The official synopsis is as follows:
In a futuristic Japan, territorial street gangs form opposing factions collectively known as the Tokyo Tribes. When one of the gang leaders breaks the fragile peace, it triggers a brutal street war for supremacy. Based on a popular Manga series and told almost entirely in rap verse, TOKYO TRIBE is an ingenious mash-up of Yakuza gang violence, martial arts action and hip-hop musical.
At the London Film Festival, our reviewer called Tokyo Tribe “the most narcotic tumble through the Japanese urban jungle since Enter the Void, an experience akin to a ecstasy-induced Sunday morning stumbling around the preening playground of Harajuku” and said it is “essential viewing for any fans of oriental excess.”
Our own Anna-Myriam Abdelhak added that it is “playful, hyper-active and unafraid to experiment and use stereotypes and classical references of Japanese cinema and amines, and overall constitutes a unique experience.”
Tokyo Tribe opens in theaters on October 23.
