Shinji Imaoka, one of the most critically acclaimed directors of ‘pink’ film, a subset of Japanese soft porn, teamed up with acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle to film Underwater Love, a sexually charged fantasy about a young woman who falls in love with a mythical kappa.

Chris had a chance to review the film at Tribeca earlier this year calling it, “a soft-porn musical with heart”. The trailer has been released via Twitch and what would you know, Sound On Sight has been quoted in the montage. Check out the trailer below.

A few interesting notes to mention: The creature effects were provided by Tokyo Gore Police director Yoshihiro Nishimura and they had just five days to shoot it and the music was provided by Germany’s Stereo Total.

Here is the official plot synopsis:

Thirtysomething Asuka has an easy life, a job in a fish factory, and a fiancé, Taki, who’s also her boss. One day, as she walks by the lake near the factory, she sees her first kappa – a legendary Japanese creature with a human form but a beak face and tortoiseshell back. She soon realizes that the kappa is her old friend from school, Aoki, who drowned when he was 17. As she hides Aoki from her fiancé and others, she must begin to decide what is most important for her.
