With the Summer of Superheroes drawing to a close, one last major Marvel Studios release remains: , the last of Marvel’s superhero team to get a formal introduction before Joss Whedon’s The Avengers takes over our collective wallet in 2012. The film’s director, Joe Johnston, has done a WWII-period comic-book adaptation before: 1991’s The Rocketeer. It seemed sensible to discuss both movies and find out if anything seperates Johnston’s movie from the recent glut of superhero pics.

Ha! Thanks Kate, I was beginning to doubt my sanity, but I’m happy I’m not alone on this one. I don’t get the title either. I mean, Thor is way older than him right? Wouldn’t he be the first avenger?

  2. Kate Kulzick says

Preach it, Justine! This was a astonishingly by the numbers, predictable, boring film. Given how many moments and elements of the film I liked, it’s rather remarkable how much I dislike Captain America: The First Avenger as a whole. I’d been starting to think the whole of the interwebs were crazy and that I was alone in not loving this movie. Thanks!

(PS- why is he the First Avenger? What is he avenging? I get it, it’s a Marvel Universe tie-in, but come on.)
