The Look of Love

Although well acted, this romp into the sex industry of ’60s via the true story of porn mogul Paul Raymond who became the richest man in Britain fell completely flat. Most of the audience did not stay for the Q&A with director Michael Winterbottom who worked with Raymond friends and family to bring his life to the screen. There are drug addiction and tragedy but selfish Raymond isn’t someone you can  sympathize with.
Welcome to the scandalous world of Paul Raymond, entrepreneur, impresario, and the “king of Soho.” Seeing mediocrity in the smutty sex parlors of London, Raymond unveils his first “gentlemen’s club” in 1958 and gradually builds an empire of clubs and erotic magazines that brings him vast wealth while affronting British sexual mores. It also brings a litany of obscenity charges, a failed marriage, troubled children, and personal tragedy.
The East

Brit Marling (Arbitrage, Another Earth), Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood), Ellen Page (Juno, Hard Candy) and director Zal Batmanglij (Sound of My Voice) took the stage after a hushed and for the most part riveted premiere presentation. This was a collaboration between friends Marling and Batmanglij who immersed themselves into the Freegan movement (in which people

scavenge in dumpsters for still edible but out of date food) for three months before they began writing the screenplay together. They then added in other issues that concerned them to do with corporations unquenchable and ruthless thirst for profit in order to examine why caring people might turn to violence for change. Surprisingly fresh and suspenseful, this might be one of the best of the fest.

Someone is attacking big corporate CEOs and forcing them to consume harmful products they manufacture. An elite private intelligence firm is called into action and contracts ex-FBI agent Sarah Moss to infiltrate a mysterious anarchist collective, The East, suspected to be responsible. Skilled, focused, and bent on success, Sarah goes undercover and dedicates herself to taking down the organization. She soon finds, however, that the closer she gets to the action, the more she sympathizes with the group’s charismatic leaders.

Stoker

Stoker

Park Chan-Wook (Oldboy, Lady Vengeance) with a translator in tow appeared before the much anticipated Stoker premiere saying that he hopes “…you have as much fun with this dream as I did dreaming it.” Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Mia Wasikowska and Dermot Mulroney joined Chan-Wook on stage afterwards. Matthew Goode described a night of drinking whiskey with Chan-Wook and finally nailing who he wanted his creepy character of Uncle Charlie to truly be. He also recounted how the director arrived on day one of filming with a gigantic binder that had every shot planned and sketched out. Still though Goode explained there was ample room to collaborate and add nuance to the film.

After India’s father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie, whom she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother, Evelyn. Soon after his arrival, India begins to suspect this mysterious, charming man has disturbing ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, the friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

Before Midnight

While Julie Delpy and director Richard Linklater answered the Q&A- Ethan Hawke could not attend because he has just begun a Broadway show. Linklater read a note from Hawke in which he remembered Before Sunrise premiering at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival. Hawke said that the “main character is Father Time.” Linklater believed that the trilogy has been “a three way love affair” built upon years of friendship and their own relationship experiences that has produced 8 kids combined. It’s no wonder then that this film gets down to the tougher issues of long term romance and personal responsibilities than the previous two.

We meet Celine and Jesse nine years after their last rendezvous. Almost two decades have passed since their first encounter on a train bound for Vienna, and we now find them in their early forties in Greece. Before the clock strikes midnight, we will again become part of their story.
