30 Best TV Series of 2014

2014 has been yet another fantastic year for television, one that continued the nichification of the medium, with highly specific and underrepresented voices breaking through in every genre. There was a comedy explosion, particularly on cable, with dozens of new series presenting confident first seasons and several returning shows reaching new heights. The dramas didn’t disappoint either, with visionary creators bringing new life to familiar settings and taking greater risks with their returning series, deepening their worlds. Throughout the year, directors and cinematographers brought lush visuals, composers pushed the auditory envelope, and an astonishing number of actors gave fantastic, memorable performances. More than a few shows delivered spectacle on a weekly basis, while others went small, deriving incredible power out of stillness and self-reflection. Some series swept the audience up, week in and week out, and others built subtly, only showing their hand in their season’s final episodes. There truly was too much great television this year for any one person to see it all (95 separate series were nominated by our contributors!), so limiting the discussion to 10 or even 20 series would be ridiculous. Instead, here is Sound on Sight’s list of the 30 best series of what has been another wonderful year for television.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, “Halloween II” and “The Mole” are both brazenly funny

“Halloween II” has the tough job of having to live up to the standards of Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s first season classic, “Halloween,” which featured an audacious bet, where Jake bargained a week of overtime to get the captain to do a pile of paperwork for him (and he won). This time around, Peralta ups the stakes and offers to do five weeks of unpaid overtime if he can’t steal Holt’s watch by midnight. But If he fails, Jake has to work a whopping five weeks of overtime with no pay. After a quick analysis, Captain Holt shakes on it. Sequels are rarely better than its predecessor and rarely does a sequel meet the expectations of devoted fans. “Halloween II” isn’t as strong as the original, but it is still well plotted and brazenly funny.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Ep. 2.03: “The Jimmy Jab Games” – the only way to move on

It’s competition time again on Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 2 Episode 3, as the team engages in an elimination style tournament called the “Jimmy Jab Games”, an absurd series of competitive events that Peralta helped to spearhead. The Jimmy Jab Games began in 2008 when the President of Iran came to NYC and the Nine-Nine was on call to help with any potential protests. During those nine hours, Jake spent a good portion of that night tossing pieces of bagel into Scully’s open mouth, thus giving birth to the event. Jake makes a side bet with Rosa that if he wins the games she will give him her friend, Katie’s phone number. If Rosa wins, Jake will give her $200 and will never ask her for another phone number again. Peralta try as he does isn’t fooling anyone. Even a blind person can see that he’s not over Santiago, and in finally coming to accept this fact himself, Jake allows Amy to win.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Ep. 2.02 “Chocolate Milk” fires on all cylinders

“Chocolate Milk” may not be the funniest instalment of the hit TV series, but there are plenty of profane laughs as they set up Terry Crews and Andy Samberg as a hilariously off-kilter comedy duo. Meanwhile the B-plots and C-plots serve as a reminder as to why the series is just so special. Holt is taken by surprise when his longtime nemesis, Deputy Chief Madeline Wuntch (Kyra Sedgwick) arrives to evaluate his work with the precinct. Meanwhile, Jake and Terry test the boundaries of “work friends” vs. “friend friends” as Jake helps Terry, when getting a vasectomy. Terry admits he’s not ready to go through with the operation and that sets off Jake to help in his foolish ways.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Ep. 2.01, “Undercover”: The pacing is consistent, the sight gags imaginative

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is back on a new Sunday night slot, and it doesn’t take long for the series to settle back into its groove. The season premiere, entitled “Undercover,” recaptures the magic of season one, opening with Detective Peralta (Andy Samberg) ending an undercover sting operation after infiltrating the local mafia. Upon his return to the precinct, he’s quickly brought up to speed on the events of the past few months while away (the best gag comes when Boyle and Santiago arrive to the office wearing the same outfit). This is followed by Captain Holt’s generosity by allowing Jake 12 seconds to fill us in on his own highlights while covert: “I fixed a boxing match, smoked a whole cigar, found myself in a room with 12 guys all named Sal, and missed you all so very much.” And just like that, Brooklyn Nine-Nine proves once again why it is the funniest show on television.
