The key art for this season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia depicts the cast as hair metal rockers, complete with giant hair, face paint, and metal studs everywhere. This excess and confidence is well deserved—10 seasons in, Always Sunny is one of television’s most consistent, laugh-out-loud funny series. Surviving to a tenth season is an impressive and rare feat for any show, but with its upcoming episodes, the series does more than survive, it delivers some of its best episodes yet.

There’s nothing more depressing than a lazy comedy, and Horrible Bosses 2 suffers from a terminal case of laziness. Instead of gleefully diving into its richly-black premise, it settles for obvious sight gags and uninspired improvisations. A talented comedic cast is wasted on material that aims for mediocrity and hits the target over and over again. There simply aren’t enough laughs here to justify this film’s existence.

If Calvin and Hobbes, those most delightful and beloved comic-strip characters, made a monster movie out of one of their fever-dream playtime japes, it would probably look a great deal like Pacific Rim. The sweaty, breathless determination with which the film’s main concept plays out, as well as how frequently it aims to top itself, is both charming and a mild hindrance. (Cartoonist Bill Watterson was able to get away with such boyhood tomfoolery because he was working with a much shorter amount of space and time.) Co-writer and director Guillermo del Toro has broken free of his almost quaint, homemade style in Pacific Rim, delivering, in many ways, the ultimate summer movie, for good and ill.
