The new nostalgia: Releasing multiple updated versions of childhood memories

In the modern era of filmmaking, ushered in when Steven Spielberg accidentally created the summer blockbuster with Jaws, cinema has become increasingly linked with nostalgia. For example, the early films of Spielberg and George Lucas were inspired by their childhood love of 40’s and 50’s adventure serials, yet directors from the next generation (most notably …

Alien Invasion Month: ‘Super 8’

So I know it’s Alien Invasion Month and that the key requirements of Sound on Sight’s ongoing theme are quite simple: a) aliens and b) invading. I also know that apart from the U.S. military’s invasion of small town Ohio, there’s not a whole lot of that second part in J.J. Abrams’ Super 8, least of all from its star extraterrestrial, a recently escaped interplanetary alien-spider-gorilla who’s been exacting revenge on the government that studied him by abducting townsfolk and household appliances to rebuild his ship constructed from white, morphing Rubiks cubes. It’s all very technical, if you must know.

2011 Box Office: It’s Deja Vu All Over Again

Want a prediction for 2012 at the movies? It’s going to look a lot like 2011. An awful lot. It’s going to be a case of, If ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Well, actually, the creative machinery in Hollywood is broke, but, as the numbers show, not broken enough to warrant fixing. So. Next year, …

Abrams’s secretive and highly anticipated third feature Super 8 arrived in cinemas earlier this week, and while it’s received fairly positive reviews, I was a bit shocked to learn how so many of my close friends absolutely hated the film. They say when …

New ‘Super 8’ TV Spot

A new TV spot for J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 was recently released, and I will now officially admit that this is my most anticipated film of the year, after The Tree of Life. I’m a huge fan of Spielberg and the whole throwback to his earlier career is quite appealing. Here is the plot synopsis …

Super Bowl Commercials Will Include Super 8, Pirates of the Caribbean and Captain America

Not being a huge fan of football, commercials are pretty much the main reason I watch the Super Bowl. They’re usually very funny, or just ingenious because the air time costs around $3 million for 30 seconds. This year it’s been announced that on February 6 we will get to see a bunch of commercial …
