10- Amnesia

What’s scarier than waking up and not knowing where you are? How about not knowing where you are, who you are, and what’s trying to kill you? Welcome to Amnesia, in which you find yourself trapped in a dark castle without your memories while creatures slink about in the dark.Unlike most games, which count on players being able to fight their way out of a problem, Amnesia forces players to think their way out of tight corners. Being resourceful and clever are the keys to success in this game, and it takes more than just brute strength and rock hard abs to recover your memories. As a film, it would play on our fear of being helpless and desperate, keeping us on the edges of our seats as we try to discover the protagonist’s identity alongside him. Although being helpless isn’t exactly new to the horror genre (which movie doesn’t include a naked woman running from the slow walking baddie?), Amnesia gives it a breath of fresh air by finding tapping in to a person’s creativity in the face of hopelessness. Plus, what isn’t entertaining about castles, monsters and mystery?

9- God Of War

Greek mythology in cinema seems to be all the rage these days. And while there’s much fun to be had watching the common man rise up and join the ranks of the gods, it’s even more fun to watch the gods of old get smacked down by an angry tattooed man. Enter the God Of War saga. While it’s a classic slash and hack third person game, with a few puzzles thrown in, it puts a fun tilt on Greek myths. Hydras, revenge seeking Spartans, and getting to rip off Helios’ head are just a few of things that make these games fun.

But don’t worry; if testosterone fueled rage isn’t the only thing you’re after there’s a heartbreaking back story to the man behind the Blades of Chaos. Kratos, a Spartan commander, is on the cusp of death when he makes a deal with Ares to spare his life in return for his servitude. Ares agrees, spares Kratos’ life… oh, and forces Kratos to accidentally kill his wife and daughter. Oops.

deadspace2

8- Dead Space

Possibly one of the scariest space games ever made, Dead Space is a fast paced, first person shooter set in the year 2414 aboard a seemingly abandoned deep space mining ship. Players explore the USG Ishimura, and fight for their lives against monsters born out of corpses infected by alien virus. The game focuses on the character’s isolation, while the eerie music builds tension and suspense. A game where around every corner something horrifying waits, Dead Space would be a sure fire hit. The prequel to the game was released in 2008 as animated film, Dead Space: Downfall, and was scary despite it being a cartoon. It’s also a definite must see if you’re a fan of the game. Considering the advancements in movie graphics today, the potential to make a live action feature equally disturbing isn’t hard to imagine.

7- Gears Of War

Gears Of War is set in the distant future, on the planet Sera where humanity is under attack. Big guns, tough men (and tougher women) paired with a complicated story line are what set this game apart from the other shooter games out there. Rich in back story, morally complicated heroes, hellish villains, and a tightly woven plot are all elements that would help make it a success on the big screen. Throw in the beautiful landscapes of Sera, hordes of hard to kill creatures, enough fire power to level Mount Everest, and characters people actually care about and there’s no way this game wouldn’t be a hit.

Plus, any game featuring a chainsaw gun deserves to be on this list.

Pokémon

6- Pokémon

Who doesn’t remember Pokémon being an integral part of their childhood? From the trading cards to the Nintendo games, Pokémon was a hit with children around the world and still is. Television shows and animated features have had people glued to the screen, all with the hopes of one day seeing their favorite Pokémon brought to life. In 2010, the release of a fan made live action trailer on YouTube for Pokémon; Apokélypse caused such an uproar among fans that everyone thought a big budget studio film was around the corner. Unfortunately nothing was ever produced on a large scale and fans continue to wait for the day that they can watch Ash take the first steps of his journey on the big screen.

Assassin’s Creed movie

5- Assassin’s Creed

Possibly one of the more innovative games on the market, Assassin’s Creed takes place in both the present and past. Desmond, the protagonist, is kidnapped and made to relive the memories of his ancestor during the third crusade through the use of a tool called the Animus. Assassin’s Creed is a game that allows the characters to live different lives through different decades, giving movie makers an opportunity to write a story that spans throughout history. Stealthy weapons, detailed costuming, and cameos from an array of historical figures are all factors that would add to its success in theaters.

Players of this series will be happy to note that this game is in fact being produced into a live action feature, starring Michael Fassbender. Few details have been released in regards to the film, but it’s a safe bet that they have more than a few tricks up their sleeve.

4- The Legend Of Zelda

Much like Pokémon at number six, what childhood would be complete without The Legend Of Zelda? From its 8-bit release in the 80’s to its innovative game play on the Nintendo Wii, Link has always had a place in our hearts. Fantastical landscapes, a princess in distress, magic, and a villain terrorizing the gentle people of Hyrule, The Legend Of Zelda has always been a top contender in the game-turned-movie category. In 2008, as part of an April Fool’s joke, a trailer was released on YouTube which sparked an online outcry to have a film produced. Much like all great games, however, it never saw light as a feature film and dedicated fans of the triforce are still patiently waiting.

Although it’s possible they’re just trying to keep us from the hair-pulling frustration of another water temple.

3- Mass Effect

Unsurprisingly, Mass Effect finds itself in one of the top three spots on this list. An incredible story arch where the player’s actions carry from one game to the next, characters that are easy to fall in love with and captivating landscapes all contribute to the magic of this trilogy. While a key aspect of game play is fighting, it doesn’t focuses solely on brute strength and firepower. Mass Effect also pulls players in with heart hammering action and heartbreaking story lines. They have all the right ingredients to be instant classics and the potential to rival Star Wars for most beloved sci fi film franchise. Plus, half the fun of playing Mass Effect is watching it unfold before your eyes.

2- World Of Warcraft

Never has there ever been a game to inspire the same kind of fan-love as World Of Warcraft. An online role playing game, WOW is set in a fantasy universe with even more fantastical characters. World Of Warcraft is also a game rich in history and folklore, having inspired more than a few spinoff novels. WOW, if made into a movie, would be a franchiser’s dream considering it has more mythology than it knows what to do with. A word of caution, however; the fans of this game are possibly the most loyal and dedicated in the world. It would take more than just stunning graphics to make it a hit. Proper casting, direction, and a true-to-the-game story are also a must.

Peter Jackson, anyone?

 bioshock movie

1- BioShock

Topping the list of video games we’d love to see as live action films is the much deserved BioShock. A terrifying first person thriller set during the 1960’s in the underwater city of Rapture, players find themselves starting the game after a plane crashes in the Atlantic Ocean. Upon swimming to safety amongst the flaming debris, players are then asked to rescue a man’s family being held captive in the city. BioShock is fast paced, requires players to solve puzzles, use stealth, fight, and make tough decisions in order to complete the game.

The landscapes are also horrifying; bloody walls in a hospital wing, broken and burnt ballrooms and dead bodies littering the floor. On top of a fantastic plot, BioShock is rich in terrifying back story; the fall of a morally corrupt utopian society where anything seemed possible. The cast of characters are just as chilling, including a plastic surgeon who doesn’t believe in symmetry and little girls who harvest unstable stem cells from the dead bodies of Rapture. This game is a goldmine of disturbingly good fun.

Now, would you kindly produce this movie already?
