True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld will be making her third foray into the Western genre later this year in The Keeping Room, alongside Another Earth and The East star Brit Marling.
The Keeping Room, whose first trailer has now been released, marks the debut of screenwriter Julia Hart, with Harry Brown director Daniel Barber helming the feature. Steinfeld and Marling are joined onscreen by Muna Otaru, Kyle Soller, Ned Dennehy, and Sam Worthington.
The film’s synopsis is as follows:
Left without men in the dying days of the American Civil War, three Southern women – two sisters and one African-American slave – must fight to defend their home and themselves from two rogue soldiers who have broken off from the fast-approaching Union Army.
The Keeping Room originally ended up on The Black List, a collection of sought-after unproduced screenplays, in 2012. The film’s original cast was comprised of Steinfeld, Olivia Wilde, and Nicole Beharie, before Otaru stepped in in place of Beharie and Wilde was replaced by Marling. The trailer plays up an atmosphere of dread, steering away from the politics of the US Civil War in favour of highlighting the age-old battle of women who are forced to fend for themselves against the men who mean to do them harm, and showcasing the work of cinematographer Martin Ruhe in the process.
The Keeping Room made its debut at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, and is set for a theatrical release in the US on September 25th, with a Canadian release date yet to be announced. The trailer can be seen below.
