The Televerse #13- Freaks and Geeks with Corey Atad

This week, on The Televerse, Simon and Kate omit the spotlight segment, catch up with Louie season two, and Corey Atad from Just Atad and Sound on Sight comes on the show to talk Freaks and Geeks. This week, we cover Sons of Anarchy, Suburgatory, Modern Family, Happy Endings, Top Chef: Texas, The Amazing Race, Once Upon a Time, and Homeland. Then we reminisce on Louie before heading over to the DVD Shelf with Corey to decide just which of the geeks is our favorite (sorry, freaks!).

Errata: In this episode, we reference Freaks and Geeks as “Judd Apatow’s Freaks and Geeks“. While he exec produced the series, it was created by Paul Feig, who deserves the before-the-title possessive credit, rather than Apatow. We should know better. The Televerse regrets the error!

I loved the Mos Def (or simply, as credited on the opening titles, Mos) storyline but what I was thinking as I wrote the previous comment but didn’t elaborate on, was that Dexter’s consideration of religion died when Mos Def’s character died. It’s like that arc was just a set up to the main plot of the Doomsday Killers.

(Contains spoiler from two episodes ago)
It’s almost a week since I listened to the last Televerse podcast but I don’t recall Dexter mentioned. The big reveal (of one Doomsday kiler instead of two) was something I had already expected so it wasn’t such a big reveal. This season of Dexter started off better than it’s playing out. I liked the conflict and consideration Dexter was giving to religion. But that now seems to be gone. His sister Deb has a nice storyline with the added responsibilities that she is struggling to aptly handle. Wondering if she will eventually consider what Dexter is up to perhaps stemming from her therapy visits.

Mario: Thanks for bringing this up- I’ve been hearing a lot about this reveal, particularly from people who feel frustrated or disappointed by it, or at least its execution. Glad to hear Deb’s getting some good stuff- I always enjoy her. I haven’t heard much about the Mos Def arc for a while. How’s that element been?

Dan: Glad to hear I’m not alone in my dislike of the finale (or at least, its ending)!

  3. Dan Heaton says

I enjoyed the Freaks and Geeks spotlight quite a bit and think Corey provided some great input. Lindsay’s act at the end of the finale also made me angry, so I’m with Kate on this one. It did fit the character and probably relates more to my personality than a flaw in the show, but it still frustrates me. Watching her throw away her talent (at least for a summer)is hard to take. Also, Martin Starr as Bill is my favorite character, though I also wish Samm Levine got my work.

On the Amazing Race, I’m actually pulling for Marcus and Amani to win, despite his nearly constant football references. This Sunday (aka the AFC Championship) should be a good one. I’d like to see Jeremy and Sandy get the boot. That would make for a decent final 3.
