The Televerse #25- Fawlty Towers with Michael Rice

It’s another in-person Televerse, as Simon’s down in Chicago this week. After talking through a somewhat mixed week in TV, Simon and Kate settle on Justified’s “Thick as Mud” as this week’s spotlight episode. Then we welcome Michael Ryan from the OperaNow! podcast to the DVD Shelf to discuss, well, certainly not the war!, but the classic British comedy, Fawlty Towers.

This week, we cover New Girl, the Cougar Town premiere, Suburgatory, Happy Endings, Top Chef: Texas, 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, Archer, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Fringe, the finale of The Fades, An Idiot Abroad, the Life’s Too Short pilot, the Eastbound & Down premiere, Downton Abbey, the premiere of The Amazing Race, The Good Wife, Luck, Lost Girl, The Voice, and Smash.

  2. Keith Viverette says

I watch a ton of shows I just believe our tastes don’t match that much really. I think you guys probably have someone cover them on the sight but just don’t talk about them on the podcast. I’m mainly thinking of stuff like Parenthood, White Collar, Castle, and stuff like that.

    1. Simon Howell says

I’ve been meaning to catch up w/ Parenthood for some time, but of course the task just gets more daunting at time goes on.

But yeah, this is exactly why we do the DVD Shelves – obsessive as we are, we know we can’t cover anywhere near everything that’s airing at any given time, so older series that are accessible to everyone are important to keep in the discussion.

  3. Kate Kulzick says

You’re certainly not alone, re:Smash, Keith- it dropped in the ratings again this week, from 8 million to a little under 6.7 million.

Thanks for sticking with us- and that’s exactly why I put in the chapter breaks. No reason to kill time on series you don’t care about. What are the most glaring omissions, for you? Which shows do you skip past? Hopefully we’ll have a bit more overlap when some of the spring/summer series start up? (Game of Thrones, Mad Men, etc.)

  4. Keith Viverette says

I have to say guys I have absolutely NO interest in Smash.

Also while listening to you guys show this week or trying to it became more and more apparent how many shows I watch that you guys don’t or that you watch that I don’t.

Seems like the more stuff that shows up for spring/summer seasons coming up the less stuff you talk about that I watch. I’m starting to ffwd a lot of stuff.

Oh well, at least some weeks I really like the dvd shelf.
