It’s a light week this episode as Simon and Kate skip the spotlight in favor of an extended DVD Shelf. After talking through the week’s TV, with particular focus on Justified, Awake, the Spartacus finale, Mad Men, and, once again, Smash, we welcome Eric Mendoza from Sound on Sight’s Doctor Who podcast on to talk about that seminal sci-fi relaunch, Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Other shows discussed this week include New Girl, Happy Endings, Community, 30 Rock, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Fringe, Bob’s Burgers, Lost Girl, the first live round of The Voice, and Werner Herzog’s On Death Row.

I’m with you on Smash – it’s very uneven. And Debra Messing’s storyline is the worst in the show. Perhaps her Julia can make some sad/torchy magic happen now that husband Frank is gone. Brian d’Arcy James (Frank) has done a lot of Broadway so I think he’s better than the material that he’s given.
Uma Thurman did her own singing in the movie “The Producers” but I can’t imagine that she is going to be Marilyn. Maybe Marilyn’s mother. And I read that she isn’t playing herself, though that still does not make her a better choice. Remains to be seen.
Some of the production numbers are great, some are so-so. I like Raza Jaffrey (Dev) who was on MI-5 and needs a little more to do. And I’ve always been a fan of Anjelica Huston. (She has the best voice!)
So I’m still watching. It’s a mixed bag but after a Monday back at work this is a good way to zone out before bedtime.

And funny that you mentioned the documentary series “On Death Row.” That program was just mentioned at work this morning. I saw Into the Abyss, and I love Herzog, so I’ll have to check this out.

You make a great on-air duo, Kate and Simon!
