‘The Thing’ prequel trailer looks an awful lot like the original

Admittedly, it’s been a little while since I’ve seen John Carpenter’s 1982 original (itself a remake of 1951’s The Thing From Another World, unseen by me), but this new version, helmed by first-time feature director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., seems to be awfully close to Carpenter’s. This is confusing for a number of reasons, principally that it shares the exact title of Carpenter’s movie, but is actually a prequel, seeking to explain what happened to the Norwegian research team that preceded Kurt Russell and his buddies in Carpenter’s movie. Admittedly, we only have two and a half minutes of footage to go on, but it sure seems like this crew went through a very similar set of horrors as that of Carpenter’s movie. In any case, we have a pretty solid cast this time around, headed up by Animal Kingdom / The Square breakout Joel Edgerton, as well as Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim, Death Proof). The trailer’s below, so judge for yourself:

After watching the trailer I thought it was a remake. I’m glad to know that it’s not. The trailer makes me want to watch Carpenter’s film again, nothing else.
