A review of soundtracks and scores released the week of April 10, 2012.
Think Like a Man: Music From & Inspired By the Film – Various Artists
Think Like a Man is a comedy based on the book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man by Steve Harvey. The film follows four couples as the women use advice from Steve Harvey’s relationship book against the men while the men discover this and try to use that knowledge against the women.
This is a relationship film that contains an almost completely African-American cast. It’s no surprise this has an R&B-heavy soundtrack. Think Like a Man – Music From & Inspired by the Film brings together a collection of mostly new songs from popular artists like Jennifer Hudson, Ne-Yo, Keri Hilson, John Legend and more. Highlights of the soundtrack include the title track by Jennifer Hudson and Ne-Yo and the two older tracks (“That’s the Way of the World” by Earth, Wind & Fire and “Never Too Much” by Luther Vandross).

Mirror Mirror (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) – Alan Menken
Mirror Mirror is one of two films about Snow White being released in 2012. Though not a Disney film, Mirror Mirror does have the light-hearted and whimsical tone of one. This is why I was very pleased with the producers’ decision to hire Alan Menken as the composer. Menken is an Academy Award winning composer who has written the music for such Disney classics as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and more recently Enchanted and Tangled. When listening to the score, you would think this is in fact a Disney film. The music contains lots of fantasy-like sounds with the use of orchestral strings, horns, drums and chimes. Recommended for fans of Disney and other fantasy scores.

Spartacus: Vengeance – Joseph LoDuca
The score for Spartacus: Vengeance is composed by Joseph LoDuca. LoDuca has years of experience composing for action-fantasy series like Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess and Legend of the Seeker, as well as the Evil Dead films. I have not seen the Spartacus series yet (though I want to) nor have I heard the music. What I can say is LoDuca has the pedigree to provide a moving and action-packed score for a series like this.
The two-disc release contains music from Spartacus: Blood and Sand as well as the prequel series Spartacus: God of the Arena.

Damsels in Distress – Various Artists
Damsels in Distress is a 2011 indie comedy about a group of girls who attend a predominantly male east-coast college. The score is composed by Mark Suozzo and Adam Schlesinger. Suozzo has mostly composed for documentaries and a few films (including American Splendor) while Schlesinger is the bassist of Fountains of Wayne and has written for film, television and stage. More than half of the released soundtrack is made up of songs from the two. The rest are songs that probably feature in the film and are of various genres.
