Snowtown played the Cannes Critic’s Week sidebar back in May and walked away with a FIPRESCI Prize and a ton of controversy. The film is based on a true story about the Snowtown murders, the killing of 11 people in Australia between August 1992 and May 1999. The crimes were uncovered when the remains of eight victims were found in barrels of acid located in a rented former bank building in Snowtown. The film follows the notorious serial killer John Bunting and is directed by Justin Kruzel, making his directorial debut. Apparently the film’s high violence level left many Cannes audience members angry.
The film will make its North American premiere as part of the Vanguard selection at TIFF. Watch the trailer below.
