Toronto – On September 16th, the 37th annual Toronto International Film Festival marked the closing of its festivities with its annual audience awards, presented at the Intercontinental Toronto Center earlier this afternoon.
Noticeably absent from the list of beneficiaries was Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, which was slated to win the Golden Lion prize for Best Film at the Venice International Film Festival but didn’t due to a formality, and Michael Haneke’s Palme d’Or winning Amour.
While previous winners of the People’s Choice Award went on to triumph at the Oscars later that year, such as American Beauty, The King’s Speech, and Slumdog Millionaire, others have not been as auspicious, like last year’s Where Do We Go Now?.
Here are this year’s winners by category:
People’s Choice Award: Silver Linings Playbook
People’s Choice Award Revolution (documentary): Artifact
People’s Choice Award Midnight Madness: Seven Psychopaths
Best Canadian Feature Film: Laurence Anyways
Best Canadian First Feature: Blackbird and Antiviral
Best Film in the Special Presentation Programme: In the House
Best Film in the Discovery Programme: Call Girl
Best Short Film: Keep A Modest Head (honourable mention: Crackin’s Down Hard)
As per tradition, there will be a free screening of the People’s Choice Award winner at the Ryerson Cinema at 6:00 PM today. Tickets are handed out at a first come first serve basis starting at 4:00 PM.
