Track of the Day: Balam Acab, ‘Oh, Why’

Yes, their/his music (it’s sort of hard to tell for sure at this juncture) been bracketed into the uncomfortably meme-y category of “witch house,” but Balam Acab’s excellent first LP Wonder / Wander isn’t so easily pigeonholed. There’s a sense of sonic depth and nuance, as well as melodic accessibility, missing from most of his/their contemporaries in the fledgling field. “Oh, Why” has the peculiar quality of a song you could just as easily wake up to, fall asleep to, or die to, with equal appropriateness.
