Track of the Day: ‘Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)’ by Florence + the Machine
So this weekend, Rick and Simon have kindly handed over the “Track of the Day” duties to me. Not to brag (I totally am) but I saw Florence + the Machine tonight in Chicago. Show sold out suckas! It was incredible, one of the best concerts I have ever seen and she incredible live. Anyways this weekend’s track of the day is dedicated to Florence Welch, the lead singer of Florence + the Machine. She is one of the best new artists out there mixing Gothic soul with indie rock. She has a distinctive and booming voice, instantly recognizable. You may have seen her at this year’s Oscars where she performed the nominated song “If I Rise” from 127 Hours in place of Dido.
This is one of her best known songs and it came off of her debut album Lungs. “Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)” is a contrast to the other songs off that album because it is actually quite uplifting and hopefull. She wrote the album while going through a big depression, partially due to the fact that she split up with her boyfriend. Although if you listen closely to her lyrics, there is an interesting bit of fear which is really powerful when combined with the uplifting instrumentation. This music video also gives a true sense of Florence’s quirks and eccentricities.
