Track of the Day: ‘You Got the Dirtee Love’ by Florence + the Machine ft Dizzee Rascal
So this weekend, Rick and Simon have kindly handed over the “Track of the Day” duties to me. Not to brag (I totally am) but I will be seeing Florence + the Machine on Saturday in Chicago. Show’s sold out suckas! Anyways this weekend’s track of the day will be dedicated to Florence Welch, the lead singer of Florence + the Machine. She is one of the best new artists out there mixing Gothic soul with indie rock. She has a distinctive and booming voice, instantly recognizable. You may have seen her at this year’s Oscars where she performed the nominated song “If I Rise” from 127 Hours in place of Dido.
Today’s song is a remix of her song off of her debut album Lungs called “You Got the Dirtee Love”, the original being “You Got the Love”. Florence’s song off of Lungs is actually a cover of Soul singer Candi Stanton 1986 single of the same name. Joss Stone covered it as well on her album Colour Me Free. This version is an extended version that features British rapper Dizzee Rsacal. It intertwines Florence’s song with the lyrics of Dizzee Rascal’s heavily political rap, “Dirtee Cash” really well. This was first performed at the 2010 Brit Awards and was released later to iTunes the day after. It debuted at number two on the UK Singles Chart. I think that Rascal’s political lyrics work really well with this instrumentation and paired with Florence’s powerful voice belting out the lyrics from her song, combines to really powerful effect. It is available on both the Lungs (Deluxe Edition) and Lungs – The B-Sides. I actually prefer this to the regular version off of Lungs.
I am attaching two videos to this post. The first is the of the performance at the Brit Awards and the second is a powerful mashup of the music video for “Dirtee Cash” and “You Got the Love”.
