The debut trailer for Taylor Lautner’s first star vehicle Abduction was released courtesy of MTV. The film is directed by Academy Award Nominated director John Singleton (Boyz n the Hood) and is described as a teenage Bourne film that has the potential to become a franchise. You might not be able to tell from the trailer but the Shawn Christensen’s script did make the 2010 Black List of the most liked unproduced scripts. Lautner is surrounded by a really solid cast including Lilly Collins, Maria Bello, Jason Isaac, Alfred Molina, Sigourney Weaver, and the great Michael Nyqvist (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). If anything this trailer makes me even more excited for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, where Nyqvist will also be playing the villain.
I think the trailer looks ridiculous and it is definitely cribbing heavily from Bourne. However don’t expect the political undertones of the Bourne series or the philosophical nature of the recent Hanna. However Singleton is still a very good director and I enjoyed his last two genre exercises Four Brothers and 2 Fast 2 Furious. Lautner is a likable actor and with the right material, he can be quite good.
