Martin Scorsese’s been around. Over the years, to go with his gritty contemporary dramas, he’s made comedies, a musical, a couple of period pieces, and a couple of wacky genre movies. One thing he’s never done, though, is make an outright family-friendly picture. If that’s what you were hankering for from the American auteur, then Hugo (formerly Hugo Cabret) is just the ticket. Also Scorsese’s first foray into 3D, the film stars Sacha Baron Cohen, Emily Mortimer, Chloe Moretz, Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley alongside young lead Asa Butterfield, and was written by Gladiator scribe John Logan. The trailer, which evokes some serious Harry Potter vibes, is below.
