Beyoncé did not release her upcoming album’s first single this morning, as a 6-second teaser yesterday suggested she might. Instead she released a minute-long Pepsi commercial where she confronts her past selfs. The ad campaign is a part of her estimated $50 million dollar deal with the brand.
Directed by Jake Nava, who has previously worked with Beyoncé on videos “Crazy In Love” and “Baby Boy”, the commercial shows Beyoncé rehearsing in a dance studio space when, suddenly, the mirrors surrounding her show her reflection. She is dressed in costumes that are taken from her collection of iconic music videos. We see a range of looks taken from Beyonce’s earlier days such as Destiny’s Child hit “Bootylicious“, the iconic “Crazy In Love” and “Single Ladies“, as well as a look from a collaboration, “Beautiful Liar“. Other videos referenced include “Love On Top“, “Deja Vu“, “Run The World“, “Work It Out” and “Naughty Girl“.
As well as showing a range of trademark fierce dance numbers, the commercial also features a snippet of her new Timbaland-produced single “Grown Woman”, which will debut 8 April. It’s entertaining stuff and much better than her last pepsi commercial. Alongside this pepsi commercial a new trailer for The Great Gatsby surfaced today which features a snippet of another new Beyoncé track – her collaboration with Outkast’s Andre 3000, a cover of the late Amy Winehouse’s “Back To Black”.
At the end of the commercial she states “Embrace your past but live for now”, and with an explosive start to the year and an upcoming album and tour it’s clear Beyoncé is doing more than living for now.
