With two episodes left in the season, “Prey” takes the mostly dialogue-free approach as The Governor goes off in hot pursuit of Andrea. To help them assess the episode and anticipate the endgame, Ricky, Kate and Simon are joined by Scott Meslow of The Atlantic and The Week Magazine. Discussed: missing flashbacks, John Carpenter, and the show’s secret MVP.

According to Laurie Holden, that tune that the Governor was whistling during the “cat and mouse” scene was the same tune he whistled to his daughter earlier on in the season.

    1. Kate Kulzick says

Thanks for pointing this out! That’s pretty cool. Unfortunately, the daughter scene was so long ago, I’d be surprised if hardly any viewers remembered and this episode certainly did nothing to remind us.

      1. Ricky says

nobody remembered that. They needed the actress to tell us in an interview. Not good …

Yeah, that’s true. I forgot as well.

Season 3 should end up the Governor’s plans blowing up in his face, discovering it’s one thing to get a surprise attack on Rick & company, another when they are prepared and restocked.

While the Governor has a lot more people, they aren’t trained. Moreover some of them surrender and others, like Tyreese and Sasha, actively turn against the Governor.

He’s forced to flee, and ends up back in his dungeonm his torture chamber, shaking, furious, trembling, then turns to face Andrea.

“YOU! This is all YOUR fault! Before you arrived, I had command, respect. I had BOTH EYES! Now, now it’s all gone, because of YOU! I may be a dead man but I’m taking you with me!”

He pulls out his pistol, puts the barrel right on Andrea’s forehead and

He looks to his left and sees something odd, a sword, a katanna stuck in it, then back down and sees a bleeding stump where his right arm used, oh wait, there it is, on the floor, holding his pistol, and

    “AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”

He stumbles backwards cradling his arm, swirling in pain and shock. Michonne runs in, gets her sword and cuts Andrea loose from the dental chair of death–and then does something shocking.

“I’m so sorry, Andrea. Are you okay?”

Andrea takes the gag off and says, “I am no-”

    “NO! You’ll pay you-”

Maggie walks in firing, shooting the gun out of his left hand and as he turns toward her, shooting him in the gut, causing him to double over, before landing on his butt, in a corner. “Enough reunions, you two, they’ve surrendered. Let’s go. We’re done here.”

Andrea stops, and says “No, we’re not,” and stoops down to a coughing, shaking, trembling, bleeding out, Governor.

“Philip, don’t worry. We’ll save you. We’ll save you from becoming a biter,” and shoves the katanna in his other eye.

She turns to Michonne, “Thanks,” and passes the katanna back to Michonne.

    “You’re wel-”

“Maggie, Andrea, Michonne?! You’re okay? We can’t find the Governor.”

The three smile ruefully at Rick, Daryl & Glenn, “It’s okay.” “We took care of him.” “Back there.” They chuckle at their simultaneous responsive and walk out of the shadows up toward the light.

Ah, so apparently some HTML code is allowed, while angle brackets are interpreted as code. That explains some errors:

I think season 3 should end with everyone dead but Andrea. And in season 4 we just follow her around like the little Hobo dog from that show.

  3. Marcus says

off topic but there’s an episode of law and order that has both tyrese and martinez in it

    1. Ricky says

      interesting to know!

      1. Marcus says

interesting enough, the Law & Order:SVU episode with Tyrese and Martinez is titled: “Rotten”

i’m a big law and order fan and i’ve been rewatching the series on netflix. I also came across episode with Milton, Hershel, Emily, Shane, Dale, Michonne — Hell, i think the entire cast has been on Law and Order at some point

  4. Marcus says

lol @ “N R narcus” close enough. enjoyed this podcast. thx for the shout out

  5. ArC says

This was another great episode. Nice to see some focus on Tyrese, Sasha, Milton, and Allen.

Andrea being The Governor’s “prey” was also very suspenseful. Both actors did a great job.

    1. Ricky says

I’m glad I am not alone this week in liking this episode :)

  6. Lori C says

I thoroughly enjoyed “Prey”. Spotting all the references to 80s/90s horror/thriller flicks was fun and the slaughterhouse set piece was very well directed.

I’m worried for Milton! He could be such an asset to the prison crew and he’s not as meek as he appears – he sassed Merle in one of the 3.0 episodes!

I also like the prison/Woodbury sets as they offer many areas we still haven’t seen: kitchens, showers (hubba hubba), walker disposal area, latrines, supply room, infirmary, armory, warden’s office, workshops, etc. Hope the Gov gets killed, but would like the gangs to stay in situ and develop the storyline of whether they come together or whether leadership becomes divided.

    1. Ricky says

      Hey Lori,

I agree. As much as like The Walking Dead when it feels and looks like a Western, I also love it when it really feels like a Horror show. I think the more someone loves Horror movies, the more they can appreciation this episode.

  7. James says

“You watched this show with a 10 year-old?!!!-Kate

Hardest I laughed. I’m more with Ricky on this episode. I have some gripes and it doesn’t compare to “Clear”, but the more self contained episodes, the better right?

I’m conflicted though because little has actually changed and yet I sort of like that Andrea was kidnapped and taken back. So close, but not quite there. Yet at the same time I feel a bit cheated. Chad Coleman is great once again. Sadly Dallas Roberts is given little to do, but as Milton he without question burned those bodies. Yes, it’s obvious, but the show isn’t above that. Though you guys make some good comments about missed opportunities. I like how he talks about The Governor being different, but show and don’t tell. This would have been a great episode to juxtapose Andrea/Michonne and Governor/Milton. They could have done this throughout the episode while characters are still moving forward(Governor on the run for Andrea)

I know after Lost it seems like flashbacks are off limits, but it’s a more effective tool than dialogue sometimes. Other shows incorporate it. A show like this justifies flashbacks. What were these characters like before the zombie apocalypse? How did they react? How they become the people they are now such as the Governor? How come we don’t see more of those 8 months with Michonne and Andrea? Why is this show so damn limited to a 10 mile radius? Then again I feel like I’m contradicting myself, wanting expansion and yet preferring when they follow less than a handful of characters.

In any case, great podcast as always.
