Maverick Japanese filmmaker Sion Sono has pushed buttons, provoked, shocked, and consistently delivered some of the best genre films of this century. Thanks to films like Love Exposure and Cold Fish, which combine an inventive mix of genres with powerful cultural commentaries, Sono is one of the best directors working today. It was only a matter of time before Sony Pictures Japan would reveal the trailer for his latest, Shinjuku Swan – a highly anticipated live-action crime drama based on the manga of the same name. The trailer comes with plenty of great footage showing off a plethora of cast members, and his usual messy, ambitious and masterfully orchestrated action. The film, which is set in Kabukicho (Shinjuku’s red-light district), follows a down-on-his-luck Tatsuhiko Shiratori (Gou Ayano) who gets mixed up in the adult entertainment business when running into a scout named Matora (Yusuke Iseya) who recruits girls on the streets to work. Fans of Sono’s work may be glad to know that he has six (count em) films set for release in 2015. Enjoy!
