The career of filmmaker David O. Russell has seen an intriguing turn in the past few years, as his last three films have combined to give him a total of five Oscar nominations and four Golden Globe nominations, with his previous four films garnering none in either awards ceremony. During the latter run of his career, the filmmaker has established an ensemble whom he has cast time and time again. Among that ensemble is actress Jennifer Lawrence, who has collaborated with Russell twice already, and is poised to take on the leading role for his next feature, titled Joy.
Based on the life of Joy Mangano, Russell takes the directing and screenwriting reins on the film once again, sharing a story credit with Bridesmaids‘ Annie Mumolo. Alongside Lawrence, the movie’s cast also includes now-regular Russell collaborators Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, as well as Virginia Madsen and Édgar Ramírez. The film’s synopsis is as follows.
JOY is the story of a family across four generations and the woman who rises to become founder and matriarch of a powerful family business dynasty. Joy stars Jennifer Lawrence. The story is inspired by the life and times of inventor entrepreneur Joy Mangano, creator of Ingenious Designs with over $1 billion in sales, as well as inspired by elements from the lives of other historic business pioneers.
With the feature set to open in the US on Christmas Day, the first trailer has now been released, and can be seen below.
