Writer Kurt Sutter has become a familiar figure to television fans both in front of and behind the camera, rising to prominence with the classic FX series The Shield as a writer and the main villain in the show’s third season before going on to create his own show, the biker gang drama Sons of Anarchy. With the latter series closing out its seven season run on FX at the end of last year, many were curious to see what direction Sutter would go in next. Sutter, however, continued his relationship with FX, as the channel picked up his new series earlier this year.
Titled The Bastard Executioner, this new series sees Sutter go in the direction of a period drama, with the show’s synopsis as follows.
A period drama, The Bastard Executioner tells the story of a warrior knight in King Edward I’s charge who is broken by the ravages of war and vows to lay down his sword. But when that violence finds him again he is forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all.
Relative newcomer Lee Jones takes on the lead role of Wilkin Brattle this time around, with True Blood‘s Stephen Moyer, Sons of Anarchy‘s Katey Sagal, and Starred Up‘s Sam Spruell among the supporting cast. The first trailer for the series has now been released, and can be seen below.
