Steven Spielberg’s first film since 2012’s Lincoln, the legendary director is now jumping from the Civil War to the Cold War with his latest, a thriller called Bridge of Spies.
The first trailer for the highly anticipated film stars a noble looking Tom Hanks as James Donovan, an insurance lawyer tasked with negotiating the trade between the Soviets and the US for two captured agents, one an American pilot, the other a Soviet spy. The wrinkle is that Spielberg focuses his lens on the American home front and on how the public reacted to a lawyer defending the rights of a Soviet spy perceived to be a villain. Here’s the full synopsis:
A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, DreamWorks Pictures/Fox 2000 Pictures’ “Bridge of Spies” tells the story of James Donovan, a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Screenwriters Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen have woven this remarkable experience in Donovan’s life into a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life.
Bridge of Spies also stars Amy Ryan, Alan Alda, and Billy Magnussen in a screenplay by Mark Charman and the Coen Brothers. The film opens October 16. Watch the trailer below:
