There are two Werner Herzog films showing at the Toronto International Film Festival this year, the first being Bad Lieutenant, and the second being My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done. The film is based on a real crime that took place in San Diego, wherein a man killed his mother in the living room of their neighbors’ home with a sword. Even stranger is that the killer committed the crime after being cast in Orestes, a Greek tragedy in which a son also kills his mother. The film stars William Dafoe, Michael Shannon, Chloe Sevingy and Grace Zabriske. Herzog has described it as a sort of horror film, and early reports on the film describe it as a cross between an extended account of the murder, the police response, and the perpetrator’s confession.
