Reader research · Data collection
Every tap makes PopOptiq smarter. Here is how our reader research works.
PopOptiq is a data collection and research-based publisher. Alongside every story we gather anonymous, one-tap answers from readers, and we use them to understand how people see the natural world, and to make every article better.
Why a nature site collects data
Most publishers guess what readers find fascinating. We would rather ask. Our articles double as small, ongoing studies: which animals people have actually seen in the wild, which facts genuinely surprise them, and whether an AI-assisted visual of an extinct creature or a storm that never happened looks believable to the people viewing it.
Put thousands of those quick answers together over time and patterns appear that no single reader could see. That is the research. You get to take part in it with a single tap, without signing up for anything.
How it works
What a question looks like
Depending on the story, the question changes: Looks believable / Looks off on our AI visuals, Looks fake to me / Knew it was real on creatures that seem invented, and Knew this / News to me on surprising facts.
What we collect, and what we do not
What we collect
- Your one-tap answers and emoji reactions, tied to the image they were left on
- Images and articles you save, and which images were viewed
- Basic reading signals: time on the page, how far you scrolled, the device type and the site that sent you
- A random session ID kept in your own browser, so one person counts once
What we never do
- Ask for your name or email to take part
- Tie your answers to your identity
- Sell your answers or reactions
- Publish anything about an individual reader: only combined results
What is in it for you
Saving works the same way: tap save on any image or article and it is kept for you on this browser, with no account needed.
How we use the research
- To choose which animals, places and phenomena to cover next
- To report reader findings inside our articles, always as combined, anonymous results
- To improve how we make and check our visuals
- To understand which stories are worth expanding and which need work
Your choices
Taking part is always optional: you can read everything without tapping a thing. Clearing your browser's site data removes your session ID and saves. Advertising on PopOptiq is run by our ad partner, which uses its own cookies; how that works, and how to opt out, is in our Privacy Policy.
Questions
Do I need an account to take part?
No. Answers are anonymous and need no sign-up, name or email.
Why do results sometimes not show straight away?
Until at least 10 readers have answered a question we thank you instead of showing percentages, because a share based on two or three people would be misleading.
Can I change my answer?
Each image takes one answer per visit, which keeps the results fair.
Who can I ask about the research?
Us. Send a message and choose "Reader research" as the topic.
